Urgent — Action Needed

Stop the Vallejo Street Takeover

SFPD is converting the lower half of Vallejo Street into a police-only tow-away zone — removing public access from a street that belongs to all of us.

This change removes public access to a portion of the street and reserves it exclusively for police vehicles.

What's actually changing

A public street, handed over to police parking

01

The lower half of Vallejo St.

SFPD is converting the lower portion of the street directly into department use — not a temporary closure.

02

Public access removed

Parking and through-access the neighborhood relies on disappear — reserved exclusively for police vehicles.

03

A tow-away zone

Any non-police vehicle is subject to towing — closing the block to residents, visitors, and local businesses.

Supervisor Danny Sauter with SFPD officers in Chinatown
Supervisor Danny Sauter said,
“I know this loss is still not welcome or easy, but I hope it's an okay compromise.”

A compromise the neighborhood was never asked about. Public street space shouldn't be given away quietly — the community deserves a say.

Questions for the community

MONEY. There are 2 parking garages adjacent to the police department where they already park many of their cars. Rather than spending money out of their budget to rent more spaces, they want to take away residental parking spots so you can pay for it with your time and money, as you circle around looking even longer for parking, or break down and pay $375/month for a garage space.

The first 60 feet on both sides of Vallejo will be taken up. As driveways then come, the space between the driveway and the end of the new tow-away-zone will likely be too small for a resident to park and we all know the police cars will be hanging out over the end. At a minium, we're looking at 5-6 spots, but the likelihood is more like 8-10 actual parking spaces will be lost.

None. The residental parking recind request was made without considering alternatives. They posted an english-only sign with small print that does not clearly indicate the changes that will be implemented nore when they will be implemented.

We are already renowned across the city for our parking scarcity, and this will only make it worse. We circle endlessly looking for a spot, or break down and pay $375 a month for a garage space. We get aggravated seeing someone just sitting in their car—imagine how much worse it will be to see police cars parked and idle, doing nothing. Half the time there are empty spaces in front of the police department; now that will be happening on Vallejo Street too. So as you circle around and around, you'll get to watch those empty spaces taunt you.
